Today (the first Wednesday in August) is National Play Day. It feels a little strange this year as I'm home on furlough leave instead of running a family friendly event (I had planned some dry & splashy water themed sessions!) This year the theme is encouraging children to play at home, something I've been shouting about over twitter through most of lockdown. Children have the right to play or have fun in a way they choose.

When we say how important play we also need to recognise that it can be hard to facilitate or invite play, even though children are amazing at making their own fun. I think expecting families to be playful at home, especially during already stressful times, is quite a lot to ask of the adults. So here are a few resources to help you be as playful as possible, I hope you have lots of fun!

The National Literacy Trust have a handy summary of why play is important plus some activity ideas for parents of under 5s. Read more here: https://literacytrust.org.uk/resources/10-reasons-why-play-important/

If you want some tried & tested ideas Claire Russell is a play expert and creates age specific playprompts. Her blog is really useful and she has products for sale.

There are some ideas for play with babies and toddlers here, mostly the basics but you might find something new to try, often the simplest play ideas work best: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/play-ideas-and-reading/

I really like The DadLab for making science fun, exciting and playful. And if you haven't used it yet, or only used it for recipes & home decor, Pinterest is your friend for play ideas on any theme under the sun (including the sun!).

Finally the best way to get play ideas is find a family blogger you like and see what works for them - Instagram is a good place to start. Here are two of my fabulous ex colleagues, Mummy Lou's Crew & Mini History Hunters: https://www.instagram.com/mummy_lous_crew/?hl=en

Have fun, keep smiling & keep playing!

Sarah
